Deep-Ocean Mining Technology III: Developments
نویسنده
چکیده
The review is an update from the review presented at the OMS-2005 (Chung, 2005). It includes discussions on the technical issues that have been already identified in the literature for manganese nodule production system design and on initial stages of crust mining concepts. It appears no new additional issues have yet been identified and solved. Recent discovery of the buried nodules would necessitate a new miner/collector concept. Under the present step-by-step waterdepth approach the realization of a cost-effective commercial deepocean mining system will take much longer than is claimed or targeted. The present incremental (step-by-step) approaches for not much deeper than 100 m in equipment design and testing in the coastal water for past 10 to 15 years may be worth re-assessing against a direct approach for 5,000-m depth technology and system development.

Deep-ocean Mining Technology: Development II
A brief observation of the developments in mining systems and technology in the past 2 to 4 years is presented. Discussions on the development of other deep-ocean resources that are somewhat similar to nodule production also include gas hydrates, Cobalt-rich manganese crusts, hydrothermal vents and deep-ocean water upwelling (DOW). Previous reviews of deep-ocean mining can be found in Chung (19...
متن کاملKnowledge Discovery over the Deep Web, Semantic Web and XML
In this tutorial we provide an insight into Web Mining, i.e., discovering knowledge from the World Wide Web, especially with reference to the latest developments in Web technology. The topics covered are: the Deep Web, also known as the Hidden Web or Invisible Web; the Semantic Web including standards such as RDFS and OWL; the eXtensible Markup Language XML, a widespread communication medium fo...
متن کاملFull-Scale, Coupled Ship and Pipe Motions Measured in North Pacific Ocean: The Hughes Glomar Explorer with a 5,000-m-Long Heavy-Lift Pipe Deployed
A 5,000-m-long, 15-in (38-cm) outer-diameter, full-scale pipe was deployed from the large Moon Pool of the Hughes Glomar Explorer (Fig. 1) while a deep-ocean mining system operated from the ship in the North Pacific Ocean in 1976 and 1979. From the standpoint of design as well as operation, one of the most critical parameters in deep-ocean mining and deep-ocean drilling is the behavior of the p...
متن کاملResearch of Six−legged Walking Robot For Use in Ocean Crust Mining
It is important to establish an appropriate transporting machine on the seafloor for deep ocean mining of cobalt-rich manganese crusts, as the physiognomy of cobalt-rich manganese crusts is complex and often varies. In view of the complexity of terrain of cobalt-rich manganese crusts and huge weight that need to be supported during ocean mining, a project of the six−legged walking robot driven ...
متن کاملFate of copper complexes in hydrothermally altered deep-sea sediments from the Central Indian Ocean Basin.
The current study aims to understand the speciation and fate of Cu complexes in hydrothermally altered sediments from the Central Indian Ocean Basin and assess the probable impacts of deep-sea mining on speciation of Cu complexes and assess the Cu flux from this sediment to the water column in this area. This study suggests that most of the Cu was strongly associated with different binding site...
